What is BMI Calculator?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. While it doesn't directly measure body fat, it's a useful screening tool to identify potential weight problems.

Limitations: BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, or sex. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass rather than body fat.

BMI Formula

The BMI formula depends on your unit system:

Metric System (kg/m²)

BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]²

Imperial System (lb/in²)

BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) / [height (in)]²

How to Calculate BMI

  1. Measure your weight in pounds (lbs) or kilograms (kg).
  2. Measure your height in inches (in) or meters (m).
  3. If using Imperial units, multiply your weight by 703. Then divide by your height in inches squared.
  4. If using Metric units, divide your weight in kg by your height in meters squared.
  5. Compare your result to the standard BMI categories chart.

Example Calculation

Let's say you weigh 160 lbs and are 5 feet 9 inches tall (69 inches).

  • Step 1: Multiply weight by 703: 160 × 703 = 112,480
  • Step 2: Square the height: 69 × 69 = 4,761
  • Step 3: Divide: 112,480 / 4,761 = 23.6

A BMI of 23.6 falls into the Normal weight category.
